Entre los días 25 y 29 de enero de 2012 se llevó a cabo en la ciudad de Guadalajara, Jalisco, la XIII Convención de la Unión Judía de Comunidades de Latinoamérica y el Caribe (UJCL).

Esta organización se ha dedicado a trabajar, desde su fundación en 1998, en el fortalecimiento y conexión de las comunidades judías de la región que se extiende desde Colombia a México, pasando por todo el subcontinente Centroamericano y el Caribe.

En este evento, el más importante del norte de Latinoamérica, participaron 150 personas representando a 16 distintos países; más de 30 directores y profesionales destacados de las organizaciones judías más importantes de la región y el mundo, de los cuales 20 eran rabinos.

La convención contó con plenarios y talleres presentados por destacadas personalidades de todo el mundo, entre los que se destacaron:

¿Tienen futuro las comunidades pequeñas? (Jorge Schulman – JDC)
¿Qué hacer con los matrimonios mixtos? (Joel Oseran - WUPJ)
¿Cuál es el sentido del diálogo interreligioso? (Stephen Fuchs - WUPJ)
¿Cómo nos reconectamos con nuestras fuentes? (Fabián Triskier - JDC)
¿Existe un "judaísmo latinoamericano"? (Claudio Epelman - CJL)
Pluralismo en Israel. ¿Mito o realidad? (Tzvi Graetz - Masorti Olami)

Uno de los momentos más destacados fue la clase magistral del rabino Elliot Dorff, rector de la American Jewish University de Los Ángeles, y uno de los rabinos más destacados del movimiento conservador a nivel mundial.

La reunión fue una magnífica oportunidad de encuentro entre los profesionales, miembros y líderes religiosos de países a lo largo de todo el continente americano y al mismo tiempo sirvió para conocer la riqueza de la bella ciudad de Guadalajara y parte de su patrimonio cultural.

Entre los momentos destacados de la Convención podemos citar la apertura de la misma llevada a cabo en el Instituto Cultural Cabañas - Patrimonio Universal de la Humanidad – como así también, la inolvidable cena de gala en el Ayuntamiento de la ciudad con la presencia del Presidente Municipal Francisco Ayón López.

Como es tradición en nuestra reunión bienal, se realizó el traspaso de la presidencia de parte del Presidente saliente (período 2010-2012) Sr. Eduardo Moel de la Comunidad Hebrea de Guadalajara, siendo el nuevo presidente electo el Sr. Ricardo Stanley de la Comunidad Israelita de El Salvador quien ejercerá su mandato en el período 2012-2014.

Cabe destacar el alto nivel profesional del Comité Organizador, lo cual redundó en un mayor y mejor aprovechamiento de los espacios, recursos y tiempos.

La XIV Convención de la Unión de Comunidades Judías de Centro América y el Caribe se llevará a cabo en el 2014 en Costa Rica y será su anfitriona la Comunidad B’nei Israel.

The XIII Convention of the Union of Latin American and Caribbean Jewish Congregations (UJCL) took place from January 25^th. to the 29^th. in Guadalajara.

This organization has dedicated itself from its creation in 1998 to strengthening and connecting the Jewish congregations of a region that extends from Colombia to Mexico, including all of Central America and the Caribbean.

One hundred and fifty people participated in the event, the most important of north Latin

America, representing 16 different countries, besides 30 directors and outstanding professionals of the most important regional and world Jewish organizations, including 20 rabbis.

The convention program included full meeting sessions and workshops led by prominent world personalities. Outstanding among them:

Do Small Communities Have a Future? (Jorge Schulman – JDC)
What to Do Regarding Mixed Marriages? (Joel Oseran – WUPJ)
What is the Sense of Interreligious Dialogue? (Stephen Fuchs – WUPJ)
How Do We Reconnect with Our Roots? (Fabian Triskier –JDC)
Is There a Latin American Judaism? (Claudio Epelman –CJL)
Pluralism in Israel: Myth or Reality? (Tzvi Graetz – Masorti Olami)

One of the most outstanding moments was the master class by Rabbi Elliot Dorff, the Rector of the American Jewish University in Los Angeles, and one of the most distinguished rabbis of the global Conservative movement.

The encounter was an extraordinary opportunity for interacting among the professionals, members and religious leaders of countries covering the entire American continent and, at the same time it showed the richness of the beautiful city of Guadalajara and its cultural heritage.

Among the outstanding moments of the Convention we can point out the opening night, that took place at the Cabañas Cultural Institute – World Heritage of Mankind- as well as the unforgettable gala dinner at the City Hall with the presence of the Mayor (Presidente Municipal) Francisco Ayón López.

As is traditional in our bi-annual reunion, the outgoing President of the UJCL for the period 2010-12, Mr. Eduardo Moel of the Jewish Community of Guadalajara, transferred power to the incoming President elect, Mr. Ricardo Stanley of the Jewish Community of El Salvador, who will exercise his mandate for the period 2012-2014.

It is worth mentioning the high professional level of the Organizing Committee that accomplished a more advantageous use of the spaces, resources and time.

The XIV Convention of the Union of Jewish Congregations of Latin American and the Caribbean will take place on 2014 in Costa Rica, hosted by the B’nei Israel Congregation.

¿Tuiteas?

Aun si no son usuarios de Twitter, seguramente en el último tiempo hayan escuchado nombrar esta red social que no ha parado de crecer. Es fácil: en 140 caracteres (¡no palabras!) tienes que poner aquello que estás pensando o haciendo, o que has visto en algún lugar y quieres compartir.

Nosotros en la UJCL no queremos quedarnos atrás y durante nuestra próxima XIII Convención estaremos tuiteando parte de lo que ocurra en el evento. Frases que nos hagan pensar, momentos emotivos, ideas interesantes, y mucho más. Para ello, utilizaremos un hashtag especial.

¿Un qué?

Hashtag es el nombre que reciben unas palabras claves que en Twitter son precedidas por el símbolo de numeral ("#") y que sirven para que puedas hacer una búsqueda rápida sobre dicha palabra y veas reunidas todas las menciones que se hagan de determinado tema - en nuestro caso la convención - en un sólo lugar.

Por tanto, el hashtag que usaremos durante el evento será #ujcl2012, y aquí en el blog podrás ver en la columna derecha de la página un espacio en donde podrás encontrar todos los tuits que hagan mención de dicha palabra clave.

Ahora bien, lo que dará verdadero sentido al uso de Twitter será la cantidad de participantes en la convención que utilicen la red social y enriquezcan con el hashtag la conversación. Por tanto, necesitamos de vuestra ayuda para que nuestro evento llegue a la mayor cantidad de gente posible, logrando de esta manera leafitz Tora beRabim, multiplicar la Tora entre todos.

Hashtag is the name we give in Twitter to some key words that are preceded by a #. These words help us find tweets focused in a specific subject or event, such us our convention.

Una visita al Cabañas // Visiting the Cabanas

La XIII Convención de la UJCL no sólo contará con espacios de estudio y reflexión. También habrá tiempo para conocer un poco de Guadalajara, y para visitar una de sus joyas más preciadas: el Instituto Cultural Cabañas.
Desde 1997, este edificio ha sido declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO, y en su interior se conservan algunos murales espectaculares del artista José Clemente Orozco.

El jueves por la noche, luego de un día de talleres y plenarios, tomaremos camiones que nos llevarán hacia el Cabañas, en donde tendremos una visita guiada por los murales y el acto de apertura de la convención, con un coctail en el hermoso patio de los naranjos del edificio y la posibilidad de seguir conociendo y reencontrando amigos de toda la región.
Una razón más para no perderse el evento más importante del norte de América Latina!

The XIIIth UJCL Convention won't be only about study sessions in the hotel. We will have also time to visit some parts of Guadalajara, especially one of its pearls: the Hospicio Cabanas.
From 1997, this building is a World Heritage Site. It contains outstanding murals made by the artist Jose Clemente Orozco.

On Thursday night, after an intense day of workshops and lectures, we will take buses to the Cabanas, and we will enjoy a guided tour there and the opening ceremony for the convention, with a cocktail in the beautiful patio full of orange trees. You'll be able to make new friends, and to reconnect with old ones from all over the region.
Another great reason not to miss the most important Jewish event in the northern part of Latin America!

¿Querían saber sobre las distintas presentaciones? Con gusto les iremos contando, comenzando por donde corresponde: por el comienzo.

La XIII Convención de la UJCL comenzará el miércoles 25 de enero a las 19.00 hs. con nuestro primer plenario inaugural, el cual estará dedicado a dos temas profundamente centrales para nuestros tiempos y nuestra región: Pluralismo y Latinoamérica.

Quienes harán su exposición sobre Pluralismo son los rabinos Gad Romang y Ruth Abusch-Magder. Gad es el decano de estudios judíos de la American Hebrew Academy en Greensboro, Carolina del Norte, mientras que Ruth es la rabina residente de la organización Bechol Lashon, abocada a la contrucción de un judaísmo global.
Gad hablará sobre cómo hacer para sostener de manera efectiva un colegio judío pluralista, en donde todos se sientan parte respetando sus diferencias en ideología y práctica. Ruth, por su parte, platicará sobre los límites del pluralismo y los desafíos de conectar judíos tan lejanos (no sólo geográficamente) como aquellos que viven en México, Uganda y Polonia.

Para hablarnos sobre Latinoamérica tendremos a Juan Dircie, director asociado del AJC latino. Juan, disertará sobre las repercusiones de la globalización y el impacto de lo que acontece en Medio Oriente en la agenda de América Latina.

Como verán, comenzaremos la convención con todo, y eso sólo será el principio.

Did you want to know about our program? In the following posts we will let you know some details about the program, and today we will start from the beginning.

The XIIIth UJCL Convention will start on Wednesay at 7pm with the opening session, devoted to two central issues in our region and our times: Pluralism and Latin America.

On Pluralism we will have the presentations of rabbis Gad Romang and Ruth Abusch-Magder. Gad is the dean of Jewish studies at the American Hebrew Academy in Greensboro, NC, while Ruth is the rabbi-in-residence of Bechol Lashon, an institution devoted to work for a global Jewish world.
Gad will speak about the challenges of balancing real pluralism in a boarding Jewish school, and the values that enable them to embrace each student with his/her own beliefs and practices. Ruth will speak about the limits of pluralism and the challenges involved in connecting Jews so far away (not only geographically) such as those living in Uganda, Mexico and Poland.

On Latin America we will have the presentation of Juan Dircie, associate director for the AJC in the region. Juan will lecture on the repercussions of a global world, focusing on the Latin America agenda in relation with what is going on in the Middle East.

As you can see, we will start the convention with lots of stuff to think about. And this is only the beginning. We are waiting for you! The convention is almost here!

Sobre plenarios y talleres // On plenary sessions and workshops

La XIII Convención de la UJCL ofrecerá una cantidad de opciones de estudio y la posibilidad de tomar parte de varias modalidades de presentaciones diferentes. Estas son:

- Plenarios: Pláticas centrales con tres o cuatro expositores que le hablarán a todos los asistentes. En ellas se abordarán diversos desafíos de la vida en comunidad, de la identidad judía, del pluralismo religioso y de la construcción de un judaísmo vibrante en un mundo posmoderno.
- Talleres: Propuestas tanto en español como en ingles sobre temas más específicos y la posibilidad de elegir de acuerdo a los intereses personales de cada quien. Entre los temas a elegir se encontrarán: Juventud, educación, tecnología, el rol de los voluntarios o diversos tipos de liderazgo.
- Bet Midrash: En esta convención vamos a inaugurar un tercer espacio, el cual estará a cargo de destacados maestros, los cuales durante una hora darán una clase sobre una temática específica. Algunas de estas clases serán en inglés, otras en español y por último también tendremos clases en hebreo.
- Keynote: La convención contará con una plática magistral a cargo del Rabino Elliot Dorff, rector de la American Jewish University de Los Angeles, quien disertará sobre la centralidad de las preguntas y los planteos en el judaísmo.

Shabat está llegando aquí a Guadalajara, así que nos despedimos hasta el sábado por la noche deseándoles Shabat Shalom!

The XIIIth UJCL Convention will offer different study options. Those are:

- Plenary Sessions: Central sessions with three to four speaker talking to the whole assembly. In those sessions, we will delve in several Jewish challenges, such as: Congregational Life, Jewish identity, Pluralism and Postmodern Judaism.
- Workshops: The attendees will be able to chose between several options according to their own interests. Between the main themes, you'll be able to find: Youth, education, technology, the role of volunteers and types of leadership.
- Bet Midrash: During this convention, we will offer a new option called "Bet Midrash." These will be several classes with top teachers on specific subjects and the possibility to learn Jewish texts. We will have a Bet Midrash in English, one in Spanish, and two in Hebrew.
- Keynote: The convention will feature Rabbi Elliot Dorff, rector at the Amrican Jewish University, with a keynote lecture on the centrality of questions in Jewish history.

En sus catorce años de historia, la UJCL ha realizado sus convenciones en diversas ciudades de la región: Panamá, San José de Costa Rica, San Salvador, Kingston y Oranjestad.
En esta oportunidad, y por segunda vez en su historia, la ciudad elegida es Guadalajara, capital del estado de Jalisco. Sin lugar a dudas, es la ciudad más importante del occidente de México, con una población cercana a los cinco millones de habitantes.

Guadalajara - conocida también como la Perla Tapatía - es una ciudad preciosa, a 1.600 mts. por sobre el nivel del mar. Aquí les dejamos un video con algunos de los lugares más bellos de la ciudad, los cuales podrán conocer en su visita a la XIII Convención de la UJCL. ¡A disfrutar!

During its first fourteen years, the UJCL conventions took place in several cities around the region: Panama, San Jose, San Salvador, Kingston and Oranjestad.

This time, and for the second time in its history, the city chosen for this outstanding event is Guadalajara, in Mexico.

Guadalajara is by far the most important city in the western part of the country (you can see its location on the map above), with a population of almost 5 million citizens.

Guadalajara - also know as the Pearl of the West - is a beautiful city, at 5.200 feet above the sea level. In the video we just uploaded, you can take a look to some of the places you'll be able to visit during your attendance to the XIIIth UJCL Convention. Enjoy!
